Why I Hate American Idol

So I am sitting here with my wife watching American Idol, and being reminded again and again why I absolutely frigging hate this show. The contestants, especially during the early tryouts sessions are mostly pathetic, no talent hacks who are looking to be famous. I don't know if they are looking to be the next William Huang, or if they honestly believe they are talented. It is sad and pathetic watching these people try their best, then having the camera's absolutely exploiting their pain, it is disgusting and turns the stomach.

There was one kid who was devastated because he wants to be famous, and being rejected means he cannot be famous. First of all I realize he is 16 and that little things seem much larger to teenagers, but he is indicitive of what is wrong with this show and everything that is wrong with the whole concept of reality TV, it is like watching a train wreck. Realilty TV caters to the lowest common denominator and shows the ugly under-belly of American society.

I don't for the life of me understand why a person believes that by becoming famous will make their lives more interesting, will make their problems go away, or what they think will happen by becoming famous. The scary part is that I am sure that this crap will win the this weeks TV Sweeps, meanwhile intelligent, quality, well written shows are cancelled and left for the dustbin.

I am such a good husband spending quality time in front of the boob tube with misses, watching absolute drivel. I feel more brain cells dying now, then I ever remember losing while drinking dimies at the dugout in Ithaca NY during college. Very Sad

Added 1/18 - Even TVSQUAD is getting into the act of bashing the overall cruelty of this insipid show.

Ditto.

You went to school in Ithaca? Me too. My sister lives up there now and I still go up there pretty often...

Howdy from Ithaca :-)

My husband and I found ourselves, once again, sitting in front of he TV watching American Idol. The early shows are almost unbearable to watch. Those poor kids who have so much belief in themselves, only to have their spirits dashed. So sad.

My husband hates that show too for the very same reason. Actually we both hate it and have never watched an episode. The commercials alone at the beginning of the season are enough to make you feel like our society has sunk to a new low.
