Is Privacy Overrated?

Saw this piece at Reason Online, and thought I would add my 2 cents (when don't I?)

It demonstrates how private companies are already tracking our activities and that this information is available to the police if necesary. But the key to this is that it is the job of the police to investigate and get all the relevant information and do the forensic investigation necessary to compile this information. The government should not be allowed to compile this personal information without due cause. And once it has been investigated, this information obtained for official police investigations should not reside in a national database.

A marketers goal is to sell us crap, and they do that through tracking customers habits. The government should not be in this business. I am always going to be skeptical when I see something about governmental agencies assisting corporations. We do not live in a socialist state, where the government just assists the public sector because it is the right thing to do. My experience says they assist the public sector when there is something in it for the government.

On this note, the Washington Post is reporting that Microsoft has consulted with the National Security Agency (NSA) in the development of their new Vista Operating System. Alledgedgly the NSA was assisting in identifying and fixing security holes in the software. Somehow the cynic in me believes that will probably be some deeply embedded shit on this new OS, which will allow the government to access information that resides on your computer. The government will yet again claim it will be strictly used to catch bad guys, but yet another way Big Brother is encroaching on our Civil Liberties.

From P2Pnet.
The US Homeland Security Department has admitted it collected more information than it had said it would in its domestic airline passenger data scheme.

And ironically, the revelation came to light during an investigation by the DHS's own privacy office.

Nuff Said

You decide and let me know if I am getting to be too paranoid and looking for conspiracy's everywhere.

And remember the Bottom Line:
Private cameras and surveillance for the good of the individual or private business = GOOD
Public cameras and surveillance by the government or police = BAD
Government mandated private surveillance = BAD
Government mingling in the private sector = BAD

J Edgar Hoover would be loving all this wouldn't he? I can see him now rubbing his fat little hands together while wearing a little Chanel number. He died before all the real fun began. I don't think your being paranoid at all.
