Voting in 2022

 Voting in 2022

Today I voted and you can probably guess which party I voted for across the line (except one Board of Education candidate, because of representation rules in the state of CT). Normally I would write something cheeky or attempt to be clever about being #Movember but not this year.  This year there is too much at stake and where I have largely tried to avoid politics on this platform, today is different.

Nothing less than the future of our country and how are country will be run is as stake

This year democracy is on the ballot

This year a woman’s right to make her own medicinal decisions is on the ballot

This year the right to choose who you love is on the ballot

This year choosing who you are and who want to be is on the ballot

This year contraception in on the ballot

This year social security is on the ballot

This year public schools are on the ballot

This year freedom of religion is on the ballot

This year hate and fear are on the ballot

This year racism and fascism are on the ballot

This year permanent gerrymandering that hinders the ability of citizens to vote is on the ballot

This year insurrectionist and election results deniers are on the ballot.

Our country is currently on a very dangerous course.  It is not the country I believed it was growing up as a child. It is not as homogenous as I was led to believe and that is honestly a good thing. It is not as homogeneous demographically, socio-economically, or ideologically. There is more diversity today than ever before and because of this we are growing apart, further and further apart, day after day, week after week, with no real opportunity or interest to come together, to heal, to mend, to figure out a common path.  This diversity and division is leading people to express their anger, their frustration, and their hate.  These people are resistant to facts and believe propaganda they are fed despite readily available factual information which dismisses the misinformation and lies.

Freedoms that are now guaranteed in the constitution are being usurped and suppressed by those who want to remain in power. Those who place their ideology and beliefs above the good of the entire population. Those who place their religion above the rest of the population. This is not the principles this country was founded upon, and those founders would be appalled by the current state of our country.

Voting is our most fundamental right we are given as citizens.  It allows “We the People” an opportunity to have a say in who represents is locally, in our state and nationally.  Every citizen should have complete access to this right without fear or intimidation, without long unreasonable lines, or creating districts that unjustly favor one party or one demographic

Neither political party is perfect but ask yourself today which party

·       Promotes democracy

·       Accepts election results

·       Holds officials accountable

·       Supports public schools

·       Will protect social security

·       Allows woman to make their own medical decisions

Think long and hard about the country you want to live in and then vote.

“I look around and see so much fear, people getting more and more comfortable with their hate, more at ease being mean, more united in their separation. And I think, NO. Not me. I will not get lost in this fearful world. I will not play with bullies. I will continue to be brave and kind. I will speak for real unity. And no matter what, I will never stop loving.” - Scott Stabile

Letter to extend Dr. Lucero's contract

Dear Members of the Stamford Board of Education and Mayor Simmons

I am most likely unable to attend tonight's Board of Education meeting, but I would like to get this into the official record and meeting minutes for the public input.

I would like to express my unequivocal support for Dr Tamu Lucero, and would strongly recommend her contract be extended.  Dr. Lucero, has been one of the finest Superintendents we have had in my 20 years in the Stamford Public Schools.   She has always been open and receptive to me, and every single one of my interactions with her has always been positive, productive and professional.   Dr. Lucero has continually impressed me with her overall knowledge of all the issues that are currently impacting the district.  I am most impressed with her ability to dive into all issues that face our district, but most importantly her work in identifying and proposing a solution for our infrastructure needs.  The work she has done with the city as a whole to develop a plan to improve our schools physical plants over the coming years is a huge undertaking and we need her leadership to see this plan through.   This plan is an absolute need that has been ignored by previous administrations and previous elected boards across the city for at least 20 years.  For this alone she should be rewarded with a new contract.

In a city with 130,000 residents and a school district with nearly 18,000 students, it would be impossible for any leader to please everyone, some decisions are going to run counter to what some constituencies want or believe is best for their specific interests. The superintendent needs to take all available information, synthesize it, then make a decision or recommendation that is in the best interest of our entire community, which will provide a positive impact on the majority of students, and not just appease those screaming the loudest. I know there is a vocal minority in our community who are very upset by the recent proposed 4x4 High School block schedule changes, and they are using this opportunity to fan the flames of discontent with Dr. Lucero. This group has started multiple petitions around their various grievances.  I would like to point out that they have been unable to gather more than 1000 signatures, which represents approximately 00.77% of the entire city population.  This is a blip on the radar and not indicative of the entire school community and definitely not the sentiment of the entire city voting population.  They will tell you they represent the majority, but numbers don't lie. Rather than focus on any of her recent perceived missteps, which are inevitable, we should absolutely be focusing on all the great things she has done in her tenure, which started when the previous superintendent departed prematurely, hit the ground running because she already had experience in our district, then dealt head on with a global pandemic. Again, these issues alone should be cause enough for a contract extension.

Finally, I would like to reference my previous letter to the Board of Education sent on May 6, 2022, where I said we must consider the hard costs associated with replacing a superintendent, along with the softer opportunity costs associated with the required time that a new superintendent would require to get up to speed and become a productive leader in our community.   Those hard dollars and opportunity costs should be spent on teachers to support students in the classroom, which will improve academic outcomes rather than flushing that same money down the drain looking for a new superintendent.  They should not be spent on recruiting firms, interviews. lawyers to review contracts and everything else associated with a proper search process.  All these tasks and the dollars associated distract directly from the mission of our school district and there is no ROI or perceived value that will be created by not extending her contract.  This is simply just not a great use of our tax dollars, when we have a perfectly capable candidate who wishes to remain in our amazing city.

Running this diverse and very successful district, takes experience and a great deal of time to understand the nuances of the various stakeholders.  Why would we cut off our nose to spite our face?  If we don’t extend her contract then we are essentially throwing away a perfectly good, proven asset, who has successfully led us through the most challenging period in the past 100 years for what?  Why do we think any quality candidate would want to come to Stamford after we have unceremoniously dumped a successful superintendent?  Why do we think that any other candidate might be better for Stamford, then the amazing leader we have now?  It would be an absolute travesty on multiple fronts if you were allow her to walk away and not extend her contract

Dr Lucero has the experience we need to keep moving our city and our schools forward in a positive direction.  She deserves to have her contract extended.

I don't understand hate

I don't understand hate.

It is unproductive, unhealthy and oftentimes deadly.

I don't care if you are different than me or what you look like or how you dress

I don't care who you love, or what you believe

I will not succumb to hate

If you hate, ask yourself why?

DR TAMU LUCERO AND AMY BELDOTTI ARE NOT DESTROYING STAMFORD PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Dear Stamford residents who are circulating this ridiculous petition parent vote of no confidence on Dr Tamu Lucero, the Stamford Public Schools (SPS) Superintendent along with lifelong Stamford resident and current SPS assistant superintendent Amy Bellotti, what is your end game?

Is the goal of this petition to get them both fired?  Well Dr Lucero just had her contract renewed, so it will cost the city a significant amount of money to fire her unless you can find an egregious breach of contract.  Note, you won’t find one.  It will cost us at least the value of the contract, a termination fee, and probably legal fees as she will most assuredly sue the city for wrongful termination, and this assumes no additional penalties or fees associated with these terminations.  I am not sure the details of Mrs Beldotti’s contract, but I assume it has similar provisions.  So let’s assume it will cost the taxpayers more fees and ultimately result in all of us paying higher taxes.  So clearly if this is your goal then you obviously have no issues with the city paying for these costs and our tax dollars going up, and not having one cent of that increase go to any of the additional grievances you have listed in this childish petition.

On top of the costs associated with termination, we now need to determine who is going to be the interim superintendent while we begin a new search.  Do you like the other associate superintendents even though they are not listed in your petty grievance petition?  Or do we bring an outsider in to babysit the district for another year or two until a permanent candidate can be sourced and seated?  We will need to hire a search firm to source superintendent candidates. Even if you do want one of the other local candidates, a search firm still needs to be hired to ensure there is fairness in the process.  But who would want to come to Stamford and lead our schools knowing our teachers and parents openly and publicly revolted against the previous administration?  Are we going to attract a world class mind in education, who is going to help address your lengthy list of grievances or are we going to bring a relatively inexperienced person who needs a steppingstone for a few years to get them experienced enough to move into another job? Note, more likely the latter than the former

If you are alright paying all these fees, then I assume you have no issues with Dr Lucero suing the school board for harassment, which by the way they found evidence that harassment did exist in her workplace. Note: her actions were justified.  Since you are alright with wastefully spending our tax dollars on things that don’t go directly into the classroom then I know were that all at the BoE, BoR and BoF budget hearings over the past few months demanding more money and resources to address these issues that you so eloquently put into this petition?  Note: You were not there since there were not since about 17 people or so who showed up to support the budget at all these meetings.  Guilty admission: I wasn’t there either.

So instead, you jump on a bandwagon of Stamford hate, talking about how great Stamford used to be, opining about a world that never existed and signing this petition.  It begs the question,

·       Have you attempted to speak with Dr. Lucero or Mrs Beldotti in person?  My experience is they are always open to hear from the community and speak to people who often have divergent opinions of their own and discuss with them how they plan on addressing your lengthy list of high-level wretchedness?

·       Do you have a plan or an idea to address these issues that can fit in a budget that just lost $2M when the Board of Representatives slashed the budget?

·       Have you once considered the fact that we are (hopefully) on the back end of a global pandemic and many of these issues that you cite in this petition might reflect that event and not single-handedly laid at the feet of the current superintendent?

Could the administration have done things differently, sure but as multiple people said there is no playbook for schools handling a pandemic and if they were they would be dated from 1920.  Ask yourself, what are you willing to do to help the schools become better, besides sign this petition?  Taking your kids out of public schools or moving to another town does not solve the problem.  Turn around your energy and ask your building principals what you can do to help them out.  They will be so appreciative of your outreach.

Meanwhile, after the firings are over, we still won’t be able to implement any block scheduling system since no one will be able to run the implementation.  This will negatively impact the students in Westhill and Stamford.  If we continue with the current scheduling in this building students will be prohibited from graduating since they are unable to achieve the necessary requirements which is the underlying reason to change to a 4x4 block schedule or the beloved AITE beloved A/B schedule.  If no change is made, then we risk even greater damage to our fine city because even more students will not graduate as they lack credits.  Hmm, this seems short-sighted and costly in multiple ways.  But yeah lets proceed with signing this petition.

Speaking of block scheduling, I have always been the biggest proponent of teachers both here in the city of Stamford and all to all my friends nationally that have chosen this profession.  However, to say this administration did not consult with teachers is patently false.  These discussions all took place prior to this little pandemic thing breaking out.  Yes, the conversation was tabled in 2020, but you had a seat at the table and perhaps the communications of this plan was not handled perfectly but you were consulted and involved.  Perhaps the administration could have done a better job of informing the teachers that this was coming, but I am sick of the whining from both teachers and parents that they were not involved in the process.  Again, everything I have seen and everything I have read indicates that both Dr. Lucero and Mrs. Beldotti have made multiple attempts to reach out to the teachers across the district to work more closely and address some of these issues.  But the teachers keep throwing up roadblocks and sending out press releases with no confidence votes by tenured teachers, why is that?  What do you want the administration to do?  Resign in mass?  That’s not happening!!

If the goal is not to get them fired, then what?  You have a created a long list of grievances, where is your action plan?  Are you simply going to go to the Board of Education meetings and taking your 3 minutes to complain about how incompetent they are?  Note: They are very competent and have the best interest of all 16,000 student in their plans

Finally, where is the teacher’s union in all of this?  Why are the individual tenured teachers in 5 (Westhill, AITE, Turn of River, Davenport, and Strawberry Hill) out 21 schools banding together to put out these politically motivated statements and not engaging their union to speak on their behalf?  Mostly likely because they don’t have a majority and they want to upset the apple cart to keep the status quo, which is simply unacceptable.  Note: 5 is not a majority of 21.

So, in conclusion, NO Dr Lucero and Mrs Beldotti are ABSOLUTELY NOT destroying our schools. They are bending over backwards to make this district better for all students of all socio-economic strata that make up our beautiful and diverse city. Are Stamford Public schools perfect?  No, but I think they are far from being destroyed.  I think there are a ton of dedicated administrators, principals, teachers, parents and other community members who want to see our schools thrive and succeed for all students.

However, if some stakeholders continue to accentuate all the negatives about our beloved institutions then yes they will eventually be destroyed by the perception that this negativity causes resulting in a diminished investment of time and money of the public which is necessary to help make the schools better over the long run.

I support Stamford Public Schools proposed 4x4 high school block schedule

Yes, Stamford its true. I support the proposed 4x4 block scheduling for the high schools in the coming year. I know this makes me the villain in the most hated plot to sabotage our very smart and successful high school students ever. I am not going to read all the contrary evidence that many of you have published, since I am not an education expert. I rely on the administration and begrudgingly the board of education to make the decisions that are in the best interest of all students, not just my children.

Let’s remember the goal of public education is help all children fulfill their diverse potential and enable students to become well-rounded individuals. We live in a diverse community and the needs of our entire population needs to be met. If this plan can help a segment of our population be more successful without significantly impacting those who are already succeeding, what is the downside? Do those of you who are outraged think your child is going to fall off the cliff they have already scaled simply by changing the landscape?  I will bet they will adapt.  Will it be easy?  For some yes, others will need to learn to climb again but I am sure you will do everything you can to help your student succeed.  Overcoming these challenges will actually make your child stronger in the long run because they learned to do things in a different way.  Not every family in Stamford has the same advantages to provide that additional support, so if this plan helps students that are not currently succeeding, then Stamford and our entire community benefits in the long run

Yes change is scary, and yes all of our children will be impacting, but I would rather focus my energy in helping my freshman son to adapt, providing the support he needs to allow the community as a whole to reach for greater heights, to give the students who have been underserved a better change to be productive members of our community now and into the future.

On some levels parallels can be drawn between the actions happening here and other districts that are banning books or changing the content of what is being taught in the classroom because several vocal parents have complained vociferously, in spite of those views not being in the best interest of the city as a whole.

I have faith in Amy Beldotti, she is a graduate, a teacher, an administrator, an assistant superintendent and a parent in Stamford Public Schools.  I honestly believe that as a member of this administration she knows what is best to help all of our students succeed and wouldn't support this plan if it was going to help more students succeed and if was going to impact those students who already do well.

This issue has been investigated and debated for 6 years and was postponed because of Covid, so it was not just sprung on us. Everyone has jumped on the kill the block scheduling plan band wagon, that there has been little or no attempt for those that support the plan or those that have legitimate questions to air their views without fear of social media ostracism and having all the oxygen in the debate sucked out of the air by those who vehemently oppose the plan trying to convince others to support their position.

I support this plan because I would like to see Stamford continue to grow and prosper.  We have seen incredible growth over the past 15-20 years, while all elected officials over that time have refused to invest in our schools.  This is an opportunity to invest in our schools and make Stamford more desirable to families looking to move to our community as it as a differentiating factor that makes Stamford schools unique when compared to our neighboring communities.   I would like to ensure this city remains appealing as a place for all 3 of my children to consider living when they finish college and have careers and families of their own.  My wife and sister-in-law grew up in Stamford, and so many of their classmates and friends have chosen to live here too as adults.  I believe the 4x4 plan will allow Stamford to be that place that will continue to attract young families which is the pipeline to long term growth and prosperity.

Please remember this is my page, and I am not looking to debate this issue. Please keep your comments to me or anyone else kind and courteous.
