Letter to Advocate - Sunday Dec 29, 2012


Dear Advocate,

I would like to thank Dr. Hamilton for acting quickly and decisively for "hiring security guards for all 12 elementary schools for the next 2 months to provide a visible presence and monitoring of visitors".  I am sure she heard from multiple members of the community expressing the need for heightened security on all campuses after the tragic events in Newtown.  I hope this quiets some of those immediate concerns

However, I am concerned that this action, much like the TSA screenings in airports, is only window dressing to make us feel safer but does not actually address the issue of actually making the schools safer.  Making people feel safer is certainly half the battle, but their is no guarantee that the person who is charged with this duty will be in the right place at the right time, if g-d forbid any action is actually required.  The second question that arises, is what screenings have these security guards gone through?  Are they qualified to work with children?  Do they have sufficient mental screening?  How will their training correspond to the increased security standards that Dr. Hamilton is implementing across every campus. 

What we must do is address the real long term concerns of our schools safety and security.  We must invest in improved systems that will provide real results, (adding bullet proof glass, reliable video systems, etc) that  will add real long term value.  Any person (3rd party, teacher, or administrator) standing guard is just a fixed cost that makes us feel better, but will not really prevent the next tragedy.

Monday Morning Thoughts (December 17, 2012)

A few thoughts for this Monday Morning 

1) Teachers - We love you. You do a great job. You guide, protect and educate our children. Hold your heads high and be proud, you have nothing to fear. 

2) We must move forward. This was an act of random violence, which we cannot control or protect our from our children. Did I hug my kids tighter this morning and let them get away with more this weekend
? You bet your sweet ass. But I cannot hold them out of schools or not let them on the bus because of what might happen. If we allow ourselves to be controlled by the heinous actions of sociopaths or mentally disturbed then they have won, and I will not allow myself to become a victim to those circumstances

I hope I raise a child who says “thank you” to the bus driver when he gets off the bus, “please” to the waiter taking his order at the restaurant, and holds the elevator doors when someone’s rushing to get in.
 
I hope I raise a child who loses graciously and wins without bragging. I hope he learns that disappointments are fleeting and so are triumphs, and if he comes home at night to people who love him, neither one matter. Nobody is keeping score, except sometimes on Facebook.
 
I hope I raise a child who is kind to old people.
 
I hope I raise a child who realizes that life is unfair: Some people are born rich or gorgeous. Some people really are handed things that they don’t deserve. Some people luck into jobs or wealth that they don’t earn. Tough.
 
I hope I raise a child who gets what he wants just often enough to keep him optimistic but not enough to make him spoiled.
 
I hope I raise a child who knows that he’s loved and special but that he’s not the center of the universe and never, ever will be.
 
I hope I raise a child who will stick up for a kid who’s being bullied on the playground. I also hope I raise a child who, if he’s the one being bullied, fights back. Hard. Oh, and if he’s the bully? I hope he realizes that his mother, who once wore brown plastic glasses and read the phonebook on the school bus, will cause him more pain than a bully ever could.
 
I hope I raise a child who relishes life’s tiny pleasures—whether it’s a piece of music, or the color of a gorgeous flower, or Chinese takeout on a rainy Sunday night.
 
I hope I raise a child who is open-minded and curious about the world without being reckless.
 
I hope I raise a child who doesn’t need to affirm his self-worth through bigotry, snobbery, materialism, or violence.
 
I hope I raise a child who likes to read.
 
I hope I raise a child who is courageous when sick and grateful when healthy.
 
I hope I raise a child who begins and ends all relationships straightforwardly and honorably.
 
I hope I raise a child who can spot superficiality and artifice from a mile away and spends his time with people and things that feel authentic to him.
 
I hope I raise a child who makes quality friends and keeps them.
 
I hope I raise a child who realizes that his parents are flawed but loves them anyway.
 
And I hope that if my child turns out to be a colossal screw-up, I take it in stride. I hope I remember that he’s his own person, and there’s only so much I can do.

Only 2 (maybe 3 with Pedro Martinez) of his comparable players in the Hall of Fame.  He was  a good player, who excelled in the playoffs.  Certainly not a Hall of Fame caliber player.  BBWA will lose more credibility in my mind if he is voted in this year, or in the future.  The only thing he has going for him is an unscathed reputation, not tainted by Steroids and the BBWA seems to want to reward mediocre players (Barry Larkin) with induction if they believe they are clean.

He was in the leage for 20 years which begs the question of he was stats compiler, rather than a real super star?

Facebook Discussion on the Government 11/10/2012



Laurie Devino "So now that Obama won by 3 million votes not 6000 and liberal ballot initiatives were passed all over the county and conservatives with extreme views on abortion lost house and senate seats and an unprecedented number of women were voted into office (including the first openly gay women in the senate) does that mean the republicans need to remember that they did NOT win by a narrow margin and consensus building is important and perhaps see that the mood of the country is moving to the center and HELP set the tone?"

My fundamental problem, as opposed to Greg who is now fixated on the electoral college which has been in place for over 210 years, is that "WE THE PEOPLE" don't have a significant voice in our government anymore.

It is now "WE THE PARTY" since very rarely and only when individual earmarks (pork) for constituents districts are at stake does either party vote against their leaders regardless of if they believe in the legislation or not. If Party says no, and you want to move with your initiatives you follow the leader. It is also "WE THE CORPORATIONS" or "WE THE PACS/LOBBY' who have more time and money to spend influencing elected officials across the board, rather than if you or I go to DC to speak with our Senators or Representative. We see it on the local level too where things dont happen unless the party approves it. We need to figure out how to take our government back and make it work for the people, not for others. As citizens with different histories, theologies, ideologies, cultures, heritage, etc. Americans will never 100% agree on anything. However, for centuries and for multiple civilizations government has existed to serve the needs of the people, and we are no exception and need to get back to what its sole purpose is, to help the people."

Stamford Charter Revision Ballot Question #2: Fire Department Consolidation

Ballot Question #2: Revise the Charter to create a single combined Fire Department including the following:
1. Creating a single Fire Department composed of career and volunteer firefighters with a single Chief and a single Fire Marshal.
2. Creating the positions of Assistant Fire Chief for Career Services and Assistant Fire Chief for Volunteer Services.
3. Acknowledging that the Volunteer Departments are an important component of the new combined Department.

Background: Stamford’s fire protection services are provided by a combination of the City-controlled and operated Stamford Fire and Rescue Department staffed by paid firefighters and five volunteer departments, known as the “Big Five”.  When the charter was created in 1949, the jurisdictional boundaries of the city’s paid career fire department and volunteer fire departments
remain aligned with the old Town and City boundaries: Belltown, Glenbrook, Long Ridge, Springdale, Turn of River and downtown. 

Prior City administrations have explored consolidating
Stamford’s fire services and eliminating the volunteer management agreements/contracts with the city. Currently, the charter allows for jurisdictional boundaries to be changed; however, such a change requires a 2/3 vote of the Board of Representatives and the advice of the City Fire and Rescue Chief and Volunteer Chief(s). 

Result of Charter Change: Creation of a single Stamford Fire department inclusive of career and volunteer firefighters, with one Fire Chief who will appoint one Assistant Chief for Career Firefighters and one Assistant Chief for Volunteer Service Firefighters and one Fire Marshal for the City of Stamford. The Assistant Chief for Career Services shall be selected from the ranks of career firefighters. The Assistant Chief for Volunteer Services shall be selected from a pool of nominees nominated by the Chiefs of the volunteer fire companies. All nominees must have a minimum of ten years firefighter experience and at least five years of supervisory experience.

Stamford Charter Revision Ballot Question #1

Ballot Question #1: Revise the Charter to make certain technical, grammatical, administrative
and procedural changes and revisions

Background: The Charter Commission identified a number of instances where the Charter was
inconsistent with State statutes and recommended changes to bring the Charter in line with them.
The other types of changes include changing dates o extend parts of the budget and audit processes
by one month and to provide more flexibility to the Board of Representatives in changing meeting
dates when there is a conflict with Sundays or holidays. Some reporting relationships that are
now being followed in practice also are recognized in the proposed changes.
Result of Charter Change: In addition to the types of changes noted above, a number of more
significant changes are proposed.  They include: 

1. Establishing that appointees to Boards and Commissions shall not serve in office more than 6 months after expiration of their term. Currently, members serve until replaced even if their terms have expired.
2. Eliminating the Personnel Board of Appeals and transferring its duties to the Personnel
Commission

3. Requiring the Mayor to give written notice of intent to be out of the City more than 48 hours

4. Requiring a request for proposal (RFP) for internal auditors to be issued at least every 5
years

5. Mandating an internal audit and risk management function. Currently it is discretionary and
was eliminated by a previous mayor.

6. Eliminating an unused provision that abandoned, unclaimed, or stolen money in police or fire departments goes into Police or Fire Pension Trust.

7. Requiring that all Public Notices will be posted on the City website and by print, electronic or
broadcast media, rather than just print newspapers.

Stamford Charter Revision Question #2 - Consolidating Fire Companies


I would like to clarify my comments on Twitter and Facebook* last night about the volunteer fire chiefs I spoke with after the charter revision meeting.  First, I whole heartedly support volunteers, especially volunteer firefighters.  My father was a volunteer fire fighter in the Town of Binghamton so I have the utmost respect for those individuals that choose to support their community in this manner.  There is no doubt that anyone who volunteers for this role, is dedicated to their town and only wants what they believe is best for their town or city. 
The two gentlemen, who did not provide their names, other than being chiefs of different fire companies responded to some initial questions we had about a truck with a digital billboard displaying why voters should vote against Revision Question #2.  When my companion and I first spoke to them, we really wanted to support what they wanted, but their bullying demeanor and scare tactics left us feeling more confused about the facts, and honestly less interested in supporting these two individuals.  Honestly I have no idea if they speak for all volunteers or just themselves.

It is sad and scary that the safety of our community is in the hands of individuals that are unwilling to come together to discuss the greater safety of the city as a whole, which they all state is their goal, rather they spend time defending fiefdoms that don't matter to any resident who has moved to Stamford since 1990.

BBWA Hypocrisy - Zisk

BBWA Hypocrisy -  Written for Zisk Magazine

I know the Baseball Hall of Fame election process is flawed.  It has been flawed since the Hall was created back in 1936.  Bill James wrote an entire book basically hypothesizing why Don Sutton should be elected to the Hall, even though we disagree on this particular player’s worthiness.   Who should be enshrined and who should not is a great argument.  I believe that Joe Jackson should be allowed to enter as his lifetime ban ended with his life in 1951.  I also believe the hit king, Pete Rose—Charlie Hustle, should be allowed to enter the hall if it is the last event he is ever allowed to have with Major League Baseball. 
So that brings us to the current and upcoming crop of players who are now eligible and are going to become eligible over the next 20 or so years.  Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Jeff Bagwell, Rafael Palmero, Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Rogers Clemens, Mike Piazza, Ken Caminiti, Ivan Rodriguez, Manny  Ramirez, Vlad Guererro, Miguel Tejeda, Andy Petitte, Jason Giambi, John Kruk, Lenny Dykstra, Juan Gonzalez, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, etc. Which ones are guilty?  Which ones are guilty by association? The only names I hear that people agree are clean are Greg Maddux, Trevor Hoffman, Mariano Rivera, and Derek Jeter, but who knows for sure?

I don’t know a baseball fan that did not stand up and cheer in 1998 every time McGwire and Sosa crushed the balls out of the yard.   Remember, it was four short years after the devastating strike that caused temporary commissioner for life Bud Selig to cancel the World Series (when the Montreal Expos were in first place and flush with talent).   Many fans were disgusted and turned off from the game.  They were not coming to the parks. 
That all changed in ’98.  When Slammin’ Sammy and Mashing Mark came to town everyone came back.  They came early to watch batting practice, they brought their kids, and they bought shirts, and pennants and beer and balls and Cracker Jack, and baseball was back.  I went to a Mets/Cardinals game that year and watched McGwire go yard on #50 and #51.  It was great.  When a reporter found andro in McGwire’s locker, the reporter was chastised by other reporters for invading a player’s personal space.  Barry Bonds, who was perhaps the best player of that generation, did not need to jack up his home run totals, he was already a first ballot hall of famer, but he saw the adoration and the dollars, and wanted a taste of the clear.  Many other players did too.  Many other players did not.  Except for the Mitchell Report and Jose Canseco, we might never who is actually “guilty” of using a substance that was never actually prohibited by the sanctioning body (MLB) at the time they played.

It took years before they could agree to legislate steroids out of the game.  That leaves us with the steroid era from 1988 (I pick this as this was the beginning of the Bash Brothers, McGwire and Canseco in Oakland) to 2005.  How do we deal with this period as fans evaluating player greatness? If you believe Canseco a majority of players were using.  Others put the number closer to 50%.  Some might argue that only the superstars were juiced, but I don’t believe that.  What is the number?   I don’t think it matters. 
We need to look consistently across the eras and evaluate them for what they were.  We don’t compare anyone from the dead ball era to Babe Ruth.  We don’t compare today’s pitchers to Bob Gibson.  We just have to admit this is the steroid era and go from there.   Steroids in baseball were a fact and the Baseball Writers of America (BBWA) need to come to grips with it.  Their recent voting for the Hall of Fame is a joke. (Barry Larkin?  Don’t get me started).   They have anointed themselves the judge and jury and have single handedly determined any known user is not getting into the Hall. 

On one side that is fine, but what about Jeff Bagwell?  You can argue his numbers until you are blue in the face and in my opinion he is a border line HOF candidate, but the writers have deemed him guilty with only anecdotal evidence.  He was not named anywhere in any report, not in anyone’s book, other than beating up a friend of mine in college, he had a very clean reputation while he played.  He played his whole career in Houston with Craig Biggio.  He played a few years with Clemens and Pettite.   Does that make him a known user?  I don’t think so, and I don’t like the precedent.
There is only one way to deal with this era and that is simply to compare them to other players who played at the same time.  Throw out the old adage 500 HR (bye-bye Fred McGriff), 3000 hits (bye-bye Palmiero) and other standards that guaranteed Hall of Fame stature.  When you consider your Hall of Fame batter, the writers should ask, was this player considered the best at his position, was he a true star who excelled in baseball during this era?  These players that lined the pockets of the owners, that filled the stands with fans, and sold newspapers with columns written by the BBWA are now being ostracized for simply trying to play the  game better faster and stronger, and like it or not, within the rules.  Buck O’Neil, the great advocate and spokesman for the Negro League could relate to the rationale of the players trying to get an edge.  No court of law that I am aware of, will allow a law to be applied to before it was enacted and that is exactly what the BBWA is doing, and it is not fair. 
Do I support steroid usage?  Absolutely not!   Do I think it is bad for the sport?  Absolutely!  What is baseball, and specifically the writers, trying to do by burying these baseball icons that personified the sport during this era?  Are we supposed to believe that those home runs never happened?  That Hank Aaron is still the home run king? That Roger Maris still holds the single season record with 61?  No.
We need the Baseball Writers of America to admit they are just as culpable in the steroid era, as MLB, the managers who turned the other way and the players who either did or did not juice, but turned the other way.  The BBWA needs to swallow their medicine and vote in the best players from this era.  If you want to add a statement on Barry Bonds plaque that says “steroid user” that is fine by me.  Let future generations know that these are the players that played during this era, they were the best, and they only did it to play the game they love, the same game we love.

Let's face it: Hall of Fame is a mess

Do we really want a Hall of Fame that basically tries to pretend that none of those men ever played baseball? That none of that happened? Or that none of that should have happened?
Hey, here's a bulletin for you: It happened.
 
The '90s happened. The first few years of the 21st century happened. I saw it with my very own eyeballs. So did you. 
It all happened, on the lush green fields of North America, as crowds roared and cash registers rung. It … all … happened. 
And how did it happen? The sport let it happen. That's how. 
Bud Selig let it happen. The union let it happen. The owners let it happen. The managers let it happen. The agents let it happen. The media let it happen. Front offices across the continent let it happen. And the players never stepped up to stop it from happening. 
It … all … happened. And no one in baseball has ever done anything, even after all these years, to make it un-happen, if you know what I mean. 
No records have been stripped. No championships have been stricken from anyone's permanent record. No numbers have been changed. No asterisks have been stamped in any record book. 
It … all … happened.

Zisk Bio

Jeff is a rabid baseball fan and baseball card collector. Realizing his dream of playing Major League Baseball died in a plane crash outside Canton OH in August 1979, he set his sights on becoming a nerd instead. immersing himself in statistics long before SABR came to reality. After SABR was formed, he realized he was not really as quantitative as he once thought, since he could not follow anything they were saying. He now lives in Suburban CT with his wife, 3 kids and dog, fighting the local board of education to make our schools more successful.

The film, which was produced by Whitewater Films, won the Narrative Feature Spotlight Audience Award at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival. The Kickstarter campaign to support the domestic release of "FAT KID RULES THE WORLD" has already surpassed its goal of 150K and continues through Friday, June 15th midnight PST.

“FAT KID RULES THE WORLD” stars Jacob Wysocki (TERRI), Matt O'Leary (NATURAL SELECTION) and Billy Campbell (THE KILLING) and is based on the novel by K. L. Going.

“FAT KID RULES THE WORLD” follows Troy Billings who is seventeen, overweight, and suicidal. Just as he's about to jump in front of a bus, he's saved by Marcus, a charming high school dropout/street musician. The two begin an uneasy friendship when Marcus enlists the musically challenged Troy to become the drummer in a new punk rock band. As Troy’s relationship with Marcus grows, Troy's father becomes increasingly concerned about his son's new friendship. 

The film’s release represents a unique convergence of traditional distribution, social media and the internet, bringing together ARC ENTERTAINMENT, The Vans Warped Tour, Kickstarter and TUGG.

Declaration of Independence


When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. — Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. — And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

Just read an article by a respected baseball writer, who says a player with these stats should be considered for the HOF because he plays a thin position. Anyone want to guess the player, or make an argument that anyone with these stats deserves enshrinement in Cooperstown?
