A Better Voting Machine
More on safer playtime
Although I fundamentally agree with Eric, that American children are generally safer now, then when we were kids, the problem remains that the media tries to show that we are not safer. By highlighting and exploiting single events, then trying to demonstrate that these tragedies could happen anywhere anytime, and you are not immune, the media is preying on the average parents fear. It is sad when in fact the exact opposite is true, children are safer today and most of these situations have a very low likely hood of actually occurring again.
These stories makes good copy and maybe a compelling human interest story, but that is all they should be considered. Unfortunately most people eat this crap right up, and the ratings show I am correct. The media force feeds the perception that locking our kids inside, managing every minute of their day is the only can we keep them safe, and this is simply not true. (And by being inside, the children can continue to be force fed the crap that media is pushing, which further validates the new circle of life.)
Listen, tragedies happen and it is the responsibility of every parent and care giver to keep their children out of harms way, and teach them how to protect themselves. We also have another larger responsibility not to buy into the crap that the media peddles and take everything they say with a grain of salt, and ask yourself, how realistic is this scenario likely to play out in my home, in my neighborhood, or city? Because once you put a reality check, then we might not act like lemmings and start to say, that is crazy and does not make any sense, but maybe it does have some entertainment value, and that is all!!
Gay Marriage? Who Cares!!!
Maybe it is just my liberal upbringing and my libertarian beliefs, but who fucking cares if gays want to get married to each other? What is the big deal, and why is this issue brought up every year come election time? If two people love one another, and want to share a lifelong commitment they should have every right to do so, regardless if it is a man and a woman, a man and a man, or a woman and a woman. Whether two gay people get married have absolutely zero impact on my life, my state or my country.
I don't feel that if gay marriage were legalized across the union (which I doubt will ever happen in my lifetime) it would impact my marriage to my wife in any way shape or form. What gay marriage allows is a dignified way for people to share their love together. Lets face it with heterosexual marriages having a divorce rate of close to 50%, what is the harm, since clearly half the people getting married don't believe in the sanctity of marriage to begin with.
The way I see it, the biggest issue surrounding gay marriage is the legal benefits which a significant other receives when the union is legal. The TV show " ER did a great story a few weeks back, starting John Mahoney from Frasier, as a drag queen living in Chicago with his lover, who becomes very sick, and requests that he call his estranged family, who he has not spoken with in at least 10 years. It was an interesting episode in that the family (sister, brother, nephew) were immediately empowered to make decisions for their family member, even though the John Mahoney character had discussed with his lover their plans, and was in a better situation to carry out his last wishes, rather than just being pushed aside by the family who did not approve of their brothers lifestyle choices.
I don't believe, nor can I understand how some do, that bringing a child into a gay household will make that child gay, a deviant or some kind of social outcast. The children that come from loving homes, with supportive parents have just a good a chance to succeed as those children that come from a similar home with different sex parents. A child raised in an abusive, or broken home will always face a larger hurdle, regardless of the sex of their parents.
But again, maybe it is just me.

Promote more Play
This a bigger issue than kids just being overprogrammed by their parents. Does anyone ask themselves why this happening? Kids are not allowed to be just kids anymore since parents believe that predators are waiting around every real and virtual corner ready to attack their child. Time magazine, I believe, coined the phrase "Milk Carton Mania" which many of my generation had drilled into their heads in the 80's and 90's, that any kid can go missing at any time and you can never let them out of your site. What they don't tell you is that 90% or more of abducted children are taken by family members or someone they know, rather than a random act of kidnapping or child snatching.
This paranoia is further fueled and explempified by the media, in what I call the "Oprahization" of an event or crime. When something heinous happens, whether it is a kidnapping or child exploitation or molestation or whatever, then the media explores and pnitificates the question, can this happen to you?
Parents today seem to believe that their neighborhoods are not safe, the parks are not safe, the neighbors are not safe, etc. It used to be you could ride your bike miles to your friends house for the day, where you can see the world at your pace. Now you are not allowed to leave your parents view in your own yard. It is no wonder that parents feel the need to overprogram their schedules, then put them in front of the TV to watch Elmo (hey I am guilty) , because we know that nothing is going to happen to them when we can control the situations and circumstances.
How can you be a kid and develop a sense of individuality when the parents in today's society have become overly paranoid? This paranoia is perceived and learned by the child and deemed to be acceptable since we all know that ultimately children will emulate their parents.
This does not mean we shouldn't still teach our children to be cautious in crowds, to teach our children not to talk to strangers, but we should allow them certain age appropriate freedoms that will allow them to create, learn, think and act as individuals, so that as adults they can become solid citizens, who know how to take care of themselves and are not reliant on others (especially the government) to run their lives for them.
So I say lets "Promote more Play" in our kids, since this is the only childhood they will have ever have.
Electile Disfunction
It is amazing that we, The United States of America, the beacon of democracy across the world, the country that goes to other countries to validate their elections, that is supposedly bringing democracy and elections to former totalitarian states in the Middle East are still unable to get our own election process correct, six years after the biggest voting debacle since Rutherford B Hayes election in 1876.
Yes that is correct, I am talking about the voting process and the machines that will be used across the country in a few weeks for the mid-term elections. I am sure we all remember in 2000 when Fidel Castro offered to come to Miami to help validate the presidential elections before W needed his brother, (the governor), his brother’s secretary of state, his father (a former president and former head of the CIA) his fathers old cronies and the entire Supreme Court of the United States to hand him the presidency?
Some states, including my home stated of
I recall in 2004, the president of one these companies that manufacture and code these touch screens voting booths being a big republican supporter, saying that he would do what he could to put (or keep) a republican president into the White House. Now anyone who knows anything about computers and programming, knows that it is possible (I am not saying this was or was not done just possible) to over or under the value of each vote that is cast by a small fraction that could ultimately tilt the election one way or another.
For example, and to keep it simple and stay with the Republican supporter above, they could program the electronic voting booth so every vote cast for a Republican is worth 1.08 and each Democratic vote is only worth 0.92 votes. The program would then automatically round to the near full value, since voters don’t vote in percentages, with each 50 votes, the Republicans would gain one vote and the Democrats could conceivable lose 1 vote. This opposite would work if the machines were tilted in the Democrats favor as well.
The way to counter this tactic is to have the machine print a paper copy, which the voter would then drop into a box, to be used in case of a need a recount. Right now, with any machine, there is no such concept as a recount. The database will show x votes for one person and y votes for another, and you can query as many times as you feel necessary, but the results will always be the same. If the voter drops a p iece of paper in an old fashion ballot box, then at least the voter can validate they voted correctly, and those ballots can be used to validate the results and ensure the machines are working properly. Once we have 10-20 years of good results, then maybe we can move away from the paper. Any by the way, if we grow to reliant on machines, how far are we from a Terminator scenario? This brings me to another issue, why is it so difficult for over 50% of the American population not to vote on Election Day? This is one of the basic rights we have fought for over 230 years, and are trying to encourage overseas. However, many citizens don’t bother to register, and if they are registered they cannot be bothered to get out on November 7 and actually vote. Most Americans are very good at complaining about government, about taxes, about national security, about civil liberties vs. the war on terror, about the War in
I realize my one vote for president in 2008, won’t mean much in the greater scheme of who ultimately wins, but I have still had my say. This year, my congressional district is a very close contest between Rep. Christopher Shays and Diane Farrell and could determine which party controls the House for the next two years. The polls show a dead heat, so you can bet I am going to vote, and I know that my vote will count, and who is elected will help determine my taxes and how safe we really are (but that is a discussion for another day)

Foleyisms
"Anybody even contemplating a sexual offense against a child, understand your life will be ruined."-- Rep. Mark Foley, co-founder of Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus
"They're sick people. They need mental health counseling. They certainly don’t need to be interacting with children."-- Mark Foley, on pedophiles, in 2002
“We track library books better than we track pedophiles."-- Mark Foley, talking to America's Most Wanted in 2001
“Well, if I were one of these sickos, I'd be nervous with America’s Most Wanted on my trail."-- Mark Foley, in 2001
"It's vile. It's more sad than anything else, to see someone with such potential throw it all down the drain because of a sexual addiction."-- Mark Foley, on Bill Clinton, in 1998

Yankees fall Again
A-Rod was terrible again for a 3rd straight year. His called strike three with bases loaded in the first inning of game 2, was probably the difference in this series. Had he made contact, moved a runner, scored a run, Justin Verlander probably would have broken like a rookie that his is, rather than give him a little boost that was able to get him threw the next few shaky innings unscathed. A-Rod was not alone in the Yankee lineup in doing nothing, as Sheffield, Matsui, Giambi and Cano all brought nothing to the party, but A-Rod personified the problem and caused the biggest outs and he is expected to perform at those times. I think come April, A-Rod will be an Angel, or a Cub, or an Astro, or somewhere outside of NY since he is not going to be able to read, listen and hear about his futility for another 12 months until October next year, and Yankee fans have no reason to believe next year would be any better in the playoffs, so in my opinion Alex, sayanora!!
All the papers are also reporting the Joe Torre is probably going to be fired and being replaced by Lou Pinella. I love Joe Torre and think he has done a great job for 10 years in New York. He was the perfect manager to follow Buck Showalter in 1996 (I wonder if Torre will follow him again to Texas, or will the Red Sox fire Francona to get him now that he is available?). Those Yankees teams of the late 90's, was a professional team that needed a low key manager who was able to defer the wrath of the owner and keep the focus on the field. Joe was able to play O'Neill, Bernie, Leyritz, Jeter, Mariano etc. and they all responded to his professionalism and rah-rah speeches were not necessary. Those guys knew what needed to be done to win and just did it.
The Yankee teams of this decade have not responded to Torre's way in the playoffs, folding year in and year out to inferior teams (Diamondbacks, Angels, Marlins, Red Sox, Angels, and now you can add the Tigers to this list. I sat watching Game 4 yesterday, waiting for Torre get up off and say something to the team, get the motivated, light a fire, but that is not his style and unfortunately, that is why it is time for Joe to go.
Lou Pinella is a fiery manager who will be able to kick the current Yankee lineup out of its playoff malaise, since most of the team will return next year. He is an excellent and probably the only realistic choice to be able to replace Joe Torre, without a major overhaul of the team, since many of the players will be back next year. When the experts talked about Sweet Lou going to the Cubs, or the Giants or the Senators (neigh I mean the Nationals) or wherever, and none of them felt right. Bringing him back to NY in pinstripes could push the Yankees back to where the owner expects the team to be, winning the World Series, not sitting watching after a premature exit in a ridiculous collapse.
Here are my thoughts for next years lineup:
cf - damon
ss- jeter
rf - abreau
lf - matsui
dh - giambi
c - posada/nieves
2b - cano
1b - wilson
3b - phillips
They need to go after Barry Zito, since he is the best available pitcher on the market, and the Tigers just proved that pitching wins in October. They need to jettison Randy Johnson, Mike Mussina, Carl Pavano, and Jaret Wright. They need to give Daryl Rasnor, Jeff Karstens and maybe give phillip hughes a chance to join the rotation with Chin Ming Wang and Cory Lidle. And like every other team, they need to work on the bullpen bridge to an aging Mariano Rivera. I expect to see Scott Proctor getting more save opportunities to see if he can ultimately replace Mo in a year or two.
So baseball is now over for me, all I can hope now is the Mets lose in some painful way in the NLCS or in the World Series, so I don't have to listen to their fans gloat for 6 months. The problem is that most Mets fans (reynolds and fallon are exceptions) have no grasp on reality and fail to see the flaws in their team. They act as if the Mets have been great forever, rather than having one fantastic season. Talk to me when they make the playoffs for the next 5-10 years in a row. Then again in the NL East, that is quite possible. I have one final thought;
GO RANGERS - they are 2-0 and well on the way to Stanley Cup glory!!!

Things you must believe to be a Republican
*Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him, and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden" diversion.
*Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is Communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of international harmony.
*The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. Resolutions against Iraq.
*A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.
*The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops inspeeches, while slashing veterans' benefits and combat pay.
*If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won't have sex.
*A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and money.
*Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy, but providing health care to all Americans is socialism.
*HMO's and insurance companies have the best interests of the public at heart.
*Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.
*A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable offense, but a president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy.
*Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet.
*The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but GeorgeBush's driving record is none of our business.
*Bill Clinton spent 8 years trying to secretly kill Osama Bin Laden without taking the lives of thousands of innocent people and American soldiers. He is accused of doing nothing and being the bad guy. Bush has spent 5 years trying to openly kill Osama Bin Laden while taking the lives of thousands of innocent people and American Solders and invading two separate countriesto do it, but he is the good guy.
*Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery.
*What Bill Clinton did in the 1960's is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the '80's is irrelevant.
